Bourbon Red turkeys are listed on Slow Food’s Ark of Taste. This turkey is named for Bourbon County in Kentucky where it originated in the late 1800’s. It became very popular in the 1930’s and 1940’s prior to the advent of industrial agriculture. The meat is richly flavored with relatively heavy breasts. Bourbon Reds are handsome birds with brownish to dark red plumage and white tail and flight feathers. After an initial stay in our brooder they’ll go out on pasture where they will be rotated weekly, offered fresh water and local non-GMO grains.
